Wellington teams finish off home regular season games; boys get swept, girls sweep
by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — A four-game winning streak came to an abrupt end for the Wellington baseball team as No. 6 ranked Buhler swept the Dukes 14-2 and 5-1 during senior night at Sellers Park.
Meanwhile down the road at Worden Park, the Lady Crusaders had little trouble sweeping Buhler for the second consecutive time, 15-3 and 12-2. These were makeup games from a rainout two weeks ago.
Wellington baseball is 6-10 with four games left to play this week. The girls softball team is 14-4 and will finish the regular season at Clearwater Thursday.
On the boys side, Wellington came into the Buhler contest on a hot streak having swept both Circle and Winfield. But Buhler proved to be a tougher matchup, especially in game one where the opponent went on a 7-run rampage to start the second inning and added six more runs in the third.
Buhler would smack out eight hits, getting 14 runs on 22 at bats in game one.Â
Cameron Bartelson got his first start on the mound with four other Wellington pitchers following. All total 14 northern Crusaders walked and two struck out.
With two more doubleheaders this week at Clearwater and then at Kansas City Turner, Wellington head coach Jeff Frazee wanted to save enough pitching for the rest of the week.
In the second game, he would go back to his pitching ace Cade Phelps, who allowed four hits and five walks, while striking out three in 6.2 innings pitched.
Still it wasn’t enough to overcome Buhler which took a 2-0 lead at the top of the first. Wellington would narrow the margin by one in the third when Cade Phelps brought his brother, Connor home in the top of the third to make it 2-1.
But Buhler opened up three more runs in the top of the fifth to lead 5-1.
Wellington opened the bottom of the sixth with a hard grounder by Co. Phelps. But he was picked off at first, and the Crusaders could not manufacture any runs thereafter.

The Wellington softball team won big run ruling Buhler both games in five innings at Worden Park. The Crusaders opened with an 8-0 lead and added a run to make it 9-0. Wellington would score six more runs in the third and fourth for the win.
Madi Lewellen was the winning pitcher in the pitching circle, allowing three hits, one walk and striking out three.
The Lady Dukes was led by Ryleigh Buck who was 3-of-4 at the plate with a triple and three runs. Brooke McCorkle would also go 3-of-4 and had a 3RBI double. Wellington had 16 hits for the game. Both teams had a couple of errors.
In the second game, McCorkle would allow Buhler just four hits and a walk, while striking out one.
On the other end, Wellington continued its hitting domination with 15 hits at the dish, combining for 31 hits for the day.
R. Buck was 4 of 4 from the plate with two doubles. Madi Adams was 3 of 3 including a 3RBI double.
The only negative for Wellington in game two was committing three errors. But Buhler had four.
The Crusaders will end their season Thursday against Clearwater in hopes of obtaining their best regular season record in history.
