Wellington teams sweep Rose Hill; South Haven girls win SCBL championship
By Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington boys and girls both got victories Friday night at Rose Hill. The South Haven girls won their fourth straight South Central Border League Championship.
Girls: Wellington 67 Rose Hill 17
Wellington stayed undefeated in the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Div. IV and secured at least a co-championship – its fourth in a row. That’s because Wichita Collegiate stunned Clearwater 46-41 in another AVCTL DIV contest. That gives Wellington a two-game lead in the standings. Here is the updated standings.
On Friday, Wellington took care of business as usual. The Crusaders took a 22-5 first-quarter lead and were in front 48-7 at the half. Wellington was in front 20-4 in the third before a running clock in the fourth.
Valerie Norwood led the Crusaders with 17 points. Other scorers were: Kirstyn Groegory 13, Britt Zeka 12, Lyndi Barton 10, Vivienne Wright 5, Ella Goodrum 2, Cruz Cornejo 2, and Kylan Gregory 2. Rose Hill was led by M. Barger with 7.
Wellington hosts Clearwater on Tuesday before ending the regular season at El Dorado on Thursday.

Boys: Wellington 74 Rose Hill 45
Wellington boys got back on the winning track with an overwhelming win over the Rockets.
This game wasn’t close; the Crusaders led 19-7 at the end of the first quarter and made it a 39-15 ball game at the half. After Rose Hill outscored the Dukes 21-17 in the third, Wellington would expand the lead back in the 30s in the fourth and ended the game on a running clock.
Carter Burnett was the leading scorer with 22 points. However, he got a technical foul in the third quarter and had to sit the rest of the game. He slammed dunk a basketball while the referee awaited an inbounds with the opposition. Wellington head coach Joe Newman said he would review it but thinks it might have been a miscommunication. Burnett has had a couple of suspensions this season.
Other Wellington scorers were Brody Weir 12, Cooper Hatfield 10, Dusty Bannister 8, Jackson Newman 6, Cole Zeka 5, Grady Norris 5, Jason Golden 2.
The Crusaders are 12-6 and have moved into the No. 6 position of Class 4A-West. They host Clearwater on Tuesday and travel to El Dorado on Thursday. Both games are winnable.
